Eric Dane has died at the age of 53. The beloved actor, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan — famously nicknamed “McSteamy” — on Grey’s Anatomy, passed away nearly one year after publicly revealing his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
According to a statement from his family, Eric Dane died on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 19, following what they described as a courageous fight against ALS.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the family said. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
Throughout his illness, Eric Dane became an outspoken advocate for ALS awareness and research, determined to help others facing the same diagnosis. His family noted that he deeply appreciated the overwhelming love and support from fans around the world and requested privacy during this difficult time.

Early Life and Personal Struggles
Born in San Francisco in 1972, Eric Dane experienced profound loss at a young age when his father died from a gunshot wound while Dane was just seven years old. In later interviews, he reflected on how devastating that loss must have been, especially after becoming a parent himself.
